Cat fish farming is a process of breeding fishes for business purpose. Cat fish farming is a very profitable business in every country especially in Nigeria. Nearly 70% of Nigerians consume one form of fish or the other. The business is never an outdated business. And also one of the small scale businesses in Nigeria that can be done even at home.
It mostly about rearing of cat fish and selling them for profit making. Cat fish farming are often operated by agriculturist, professional, but nowadays, you don’t need special training to start the business. All you need is to know little or few about the business and you will become successful in no time. Don’t go into fish business without knowing little information about the business, it’s very risky. All you need to know is how they breed, live and survive.
Pond for breeding them, it won’t cost you a lot of money to make a pond, once you have a land space. It is very good if you have an open space of your own for keeping them. If not, get big plastic bowls or other open containers that can contain the amount of fishes you are buying.
A water facility is also required, if you want to rear much of them, you need to be changing their water every day for proper protection.
Food is very important for their survival. They have their own special food. Don’t start putting just bread into their water thinking they will survive on it. Treatment is also needed for their growth.
Quickly remove dead fish among them to avoid any toxic or dangerous substances in the water that can affect them.
Remove any fish that you notice is in danger maybe through the treatment is facing from others. A fish can be a victim, they can scrap each other and the wicker ones may die. So always take note of them.
You must be able to accept the risk and benefit of the business, because you can’t buy fishes and expect all of them to survive at the end of the day for you to end up selling all of them at your expected profit. You must be ready to let go of some fishes and also accept the challenges. But if you are dedicated and determined, you will surely profit with the remaining surviving fishes.
You can buy little cat fishes at the rate of N50 per one. And you ended up buying 100 pieces of them; you breed them for three to five months. You feed them monthly with food of about N6,000, you treat them with like N1,000. The water cost can be like N1,000, if you are buying water. The total you invested on them is N40,000. You might lose about 10 to 20 fishes out of the 100 fishes. You can sell them N1,200 upward. So if you sell them for N1,200 each. N1,200 x 80 pieces = N96,000 minus the total cost you invested N40,000 = N56,000 monthly for 100 pieces of fishes. And definitely as a fish farmer, you will have more than 100 fishes in your pond. Assuming 1,000 fishes and you lose like 100, you sell the remaining 900 for N1,500 = N1,350,000 – investing cost of about N400,000, note that because they are much, you might not spend up to that amount but let just assume. Your profit in five months is 950,000.
That is to me a very good business investment; rarely will you see business in Nigeria that will fetch you that kind of monthly income.
The calculation is just a form of assumption, because as a farmer, you are not expected to sell all the fishes at ones, sell some and leave some to produce younger ones for continuity.
Wish you luck in your endeavor!
